(Repost from Bsky) I feel like publishing needs to be more ‘elitist’ about making special editions because why did i just these gorgeous special edition covers knowing full well the actual content is dog shit. If I can be a pretentious bitch for a moment- like ok I understand why publishing works the way it does it’s just sooo crazy seeing like all of the money and talent going into marketing these books only for the writing to be so nothingburger. That’s truly what gets me about booktok “slop” (ew I hate that word) like it’s not so much a matter of ‘I don’t like these books so they suck’ like i understand that I am not the objective decider of what makes a book good or bad; I don’t love the romance genre but that doesn’t make it worthless as art but like booktok books are just so lifeless. The writing has as much depth as like, tags on an ao3 fic. And I know that’s how publishing always is and half the actual good shit is self published and or queer but a petty part of me is like why are we making special editions of books that, frankly, don’t have anything interesting or notable about them.
